Do I need a permit to move furniture in or out in Abu Dhabi?
Not from the government. Abu Dhabi Municipality and TAMM publish no household move permit, so anyone telling you the emirate requires one is mistaken. What does exist is building and community level: most towers on Al Reem, Al Raha Beach, Saadiyat and Al Maryah want a visitor or contractor pass for the crew, the service lift booked into a slot, and sometimes a short no-objection note from the management office, and a number of them hold a refundable deposit against damage to the lift or lobby. Villa communities are usually far simpler. Give us the building name and unit when you book and we deal with the management office, because the rules are set building by building rather than emirate-wide.
How many boxes will my Abu Dhabi home need?
More than most people budget for, and the furniture is not what decides it. From the jobs we run: a studio takes roughly 15 to 20 cartons, a one-bedroom 25 to 35, a two-bedroom 40 to 60, and a four or five-bedroom villa in Khalifa City or Al Reef anywhere from 90 to well past 130 once the majlis, the store room and the maid’s room are counted. Wardrobe cartons sit on top, usually two to four per bedroom. Kitchens are the reliable shock at 12 to 20 cartons on their own, and they take a crew longer than any bedroom. We count it from your room video so the van arrives loaded correctly instead of sending someone back to Mussafah mid-morning.
What will you not pack?
Anything classed as dangerous goods, and anything that will not survive a sealed truck in this climate. That rules out paint, thinners, solvents and adhesives; aerosols of every kind; butane and propane cylinders including the barbecue bottle; petrol, kerosene and generator fuel; fireworks; car batteries; and pool chemicals. We will not box opened or perishable food either. A closed container standing on tarmac in an Abu Dhabi August runs well above the air temperature, which is why gas and aerosols are a genuine hazard rather than a paperwork rule. Point them out at the survey and we will set them aside and, in most cases, tell you the right way to dispose of them.
Where will the truck park, and does that cost me anything?
It costs you nothing, but it does need arranging. Furniture trucks in Abu Dhabi are fined for blocking parked vehicles or loading from the roadway, and the goods-transport permit a mover carries does not exempt the vehicle from ordinary parking rules. On the island in particular, kerb space near a tower entrance is scarce. That is why we contact building security before the day to get bay or loading-dock access booked alongside the service lift, rather than turning up and hoping. In villa communities it is rarely an issue, since the truck goes onto the driveway.
