Everything Worth Knowing Before You Drill a Dubai Wall
Dubai walls are not all the same, and that single fact decides most hanging jobs. Apartments are typically hollow concrete block with gypsum partition walls between rooms; villas lean towards solid blockwork and concrete. Tap the wall before you buy fixings — a hollow, drummy sound means gypsum board on metal studs, where a nail or a basic plastic plug holds almost nothing. That wall needs a spring toggle or a fixing into the stud itself. Solid concrete wants a hammer drill and a nylon plug; hollow block needs a plug long enough to reach past the void; and tile or marble must be drilled with a diamond bit and the hammer mode switched off, or it cracks. Anything over about fifteen kilos should sit on a cleat or a plate spanning several anchors, never a single hook.
Two Dubai-specific things catch tenants out. First, many towers restrict drilling to set hours and some require building management approval before a contractor drills at all — worth a call to your community team before booking, because it is the one delay nobody can shortcut. Second, most tenancy contracts make you responsible for making good when you leave, so holes usually need filling and touching up or the cost comes out of your deposit. Plan the wall once rather than twice. And a word on adhesive strips: they are tempting for short leases, but Dubai humidity and freshly painted walls defeat them regularly, and a mirror coming off a wall is a far more expensive lesson than a filled hole.
