Packing in Sharjah: The Questions We Get Asked
When should I book packing around my Sharjah tenancy attestation?
Attest first, move second. A Sharjah tenancy contract has to be attested through the Municipality, it costs four per cent of the annual rent with a minimum of AED 500, and it usually processes inside a working day — and SEWA activates the supply off the back of that attestation. Move in before it is done and you can find yourself standing in a dark flat with no water and a truckload of cartons. The sequence that works is: attest, confirm the supply is live, then have us pack the day before the truck comes so loading starts on a sealed, labelled home. On the way out, your landlord’s no-objection letter and a settled SEWA bill are what close the account and release the deposit, so start those early too.
My building has a small lift, or none at all. Does that change anything?
It changes the time more than anything else, and it is the single most common thing sellers of a quote leave out. Plenty of the older stock around Rolla, Abu Shagara and Al Qasimia has one small lift shared with every other resident, or no service lift at all, which turns a two-hour carry into a four-hour one and needs more hands. We would rather know that from your video than discover it on the day, because it is exactly the kind of thing that makes another company’s cheap phone quote grow by lunchtime. Tell us the building and the floor and it goes into the fixed price up front. Newer towers in Al Nahda, Al Majaz, Aljada and Al Zahia usually have a proper service lift, which we book in advance.
Which items are you not allowed to pack?
Anything treated as dangerous goods, plus anything that will not survive a sealed truck in this heat. That means paint, thinners, solvents and adhesives; aerosols of any kind; butane and propane cylinders including the barbecue bottle; petrol, kerosene and generator fuel; fireworks; car batteries; and pool chemicals. Opened or perishable food does not travel either. A closed container standing in a Sharjah summer runs well above the outside temperature, which is why gas and aerosols are a real hazard rather than a formality. Show us what you have at the survey, we will separate it, and in most cases we can point you to the right way of disposing of it.
Does professional packing affect my insurance cover?
It usually does, and people tend to learn this after something breaks. Relocation policies written in the UAE normally separate professionally packed goods from owner-packed ones. A professional pack is generally covered for accidental damage across the whole chain, from packing through transit to unpacking. Cartons you filled yourself are typically covered for total loss only — fire, or the vehicle overturning — with nothing payable on a dinner service that arrives in pieces because the box was underfilled. Terms differ between insurers and you should read your own policy, but if you are packing the fragile things yourself to save a little, that is the trade you are making.
